This Coming Week


  • Lauren’s 31st Birthday Celebration:  Tonight!  We will be hosting a twilight sail (weather/keen skippers permitting) – meeting @1700 on the pontoon.    Snacks & nibbles will be provided on the jetty after sail (approx 1830-1900).  We will then head to the boatshed for pizza & cake, but not before we polish off a few “warm-ups” on the boats (of course!)  Pizza will be a $5 contribution per person and there will be a vegetarian option.  All members welcome!  NB: Post-sail drinks and nibbles may be relocated to the boatshed due to inclement weather.

General Notices


  • Trespass Notices:  Notices have been issued this week due to overcrowding on the dinghy tie-up section of the pontoon.  If you are a current member and received one of these notices yesterday, please attach (or make more visible from the pontoon) a current (2014-15) sticker.  Come and see me (Lisa) in the office if you do not have one.  Also please ensure your vehicles are displaying a current sticker – car park notices appearing soon!  Thanks in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
  • YQ Membership:  If you held this membership prior to renewing your CYC membership for 2014-15, please advise me (via email) of your membership expiry date so I can re-register you under their “My Club” System from that date onwards.  Thank you.

  • Lindsay Joice Series:  The Lindsay Joice Series (Races 1-3) will be held over a three week period in May.  These dates are currently scheduled as the 3rd, 9th and 10th of May, 2015.  Further details will be supplied as they become available.
  • The Mickey Ink Port Douglas Race Week:  Will be held 24th-29th May, 2015.  The Micky Ink Port Douglas Race Week is held over Port Douglas’s Carnivale, so it is a fabulous time to be in Port Douglas, the town comes alive with a plethora of events and of course the regatta is the highlight.  Please see title link for Notice of Race.

  • Instructor Training for 2015:  “In 2015 the CYC plans to conduct a series of training session in partnership with Yachting Queensland (YQ), the Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron (CCYS), and Mission Beach Sailing Club, for Dinghy Instructor Course, Assistant Dinghy Instructor Course, Power Boat Handling, Safety Boat Certification and Race Official Training.  This is part of our commitment to building sailing capacity across all fleets and will support our application for re-accreditation as a Discover Sailing Centre.  The CYC Executive Committee is currently considering a proposal to reimburse training cost for those member who then in turn offer their skills to the club to run course.” – Scott Davis.

  • YQ Training Session Attention Please – All future CYC trainers and YQ registered club administrators:  Julien from Yachting Queensland will be holding a training session for people to learn about navigating the “My Centre” portion of their website (for trainers), and the “My Club” portion (for club officials and administrators who wish to learn more, or are having trouble navigating this system).  The information session will be held at the CCYS on the afternoon of Friday, 27th February, 2015.  Please complete the attached brief survey if you wish to attend (click on title link to open).  Session times may vary and will be confirmed by Yachting Queensland upon survey submittal.  Future trainers please note: Your attendance, if at all possible is highly recommended, as you WILL be using this software for club training sessions in the future.  Thanks!

  • Marina TheftsLocal police are investigating recent thefts from five commercial vessels moored at the Marlin Marina.  One vessel sustained damage after offenders forced entry to the cabin and rummaged the bar.  One vessel had an outboard motor stolen after it was untied from the bow.  In another a Yamaha outboard motor fuel tank with 20L of unleaded fuel and a crate of 40-50 masks and snorkels were stolen.  A portable fuel tank and filter were stolen from a tender.  Boaties in the Marina are urged to secure valuables and alert police to any suspicious activities.  The offenders appear to be approaching the vessels from the waterside in a small boat and climbing aboard.  Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day.  Crime Stoppers is a registered charity and community volunteer organisation working in partnership with the Queensland Police Service.  For all non-urgent police reporting or general police inquiries contact Policelink on 131 444 or Policelink.qld.gov.au 24hrs a day.

  • Social Day / Graham Janz’s 50th Birthday:  Members are invited to a social function at Ellis Beach annexe on Saturday 24th January.  It will incorporate Graham Janz’s 50th.  Bring your own drinks and a share plate of food.  BBQ facilities are also available.  Kicks off at 5pm with cricket on the lawn.  Camping is available at the usual rates.

  • Marina Thefts:  Local police are investigating thefts from five commercial vessels moored at the Marlin Marina in the last week.  One vessel sustained damage after offenders forced entry to the cabin and rummaged the bar.  One vessel had an outboard motor stolen after it was untied from the bow.  In another a Yamaha outboard motor fuel tank with 20L of unleaded fuel and a crate of 40-50 masks and snorkels were stolen.  A portable fuel tank and filter were stolen from a tender.  Boaties in the Marina are urged to secure valuables and alert police to any suspicious activities.  The offenders appear to be approaching the vessels from the waterside in a small boat and climbing aboard.  Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day.  Crime Stoppers is a registered charity and community volunteer organisation working in partnership with the Queensland Police Service.  For all non-urgent police reporting or general police inquiries contact Policelink on 131 444 or Policelink.qld.gov.au 24hrs a day.
  • Sailing Committee:  We won’t be holding a Sailing Committee meeting in January.  The next meeting will be held at 5:30pm, Monday the 9th of February in the Regatta Room.  Any agenda items, please forward to Scott one week prior to meeting.
  • CYC Half Yearly Meeting:  The Executive Committee has reviewed the date of the Half Yearly meeting and has decided to change it to THURSDAY 19th FEBRUARY 6PM .  Of recent times the Sunday scheduled meetings have not attracted sufficient members to form a quorum.  The Executive Committee is trialling a weeknight date this year to see if that will increase the numbers.  Please disregard the date of the 15th February which is listed in the calendar.  Thank you.  – Vice Commodore, Brian Dowling.

  • Instructor Training for 2015:  “In 2015 the CYC plans to conduct a series of training session in partnership with Yachting Queensland (YQ), the Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron (CCYS), and Mission Beach Sailing Club,  for Keel Boat Instructors (expressions of interest urgently sought), Dinghy Instructor Course, Assistant Dinghy Instructor Course, Power Boat Handling, Safety Boat Certification and Race Official Training.  This is part of our commitment to building sailing capacity across all fleets and will support our application for re-accreditation as a Discover Sailing Centre.  The first course being held in 2015 is the Keel Boat Instructor Course (click on link above) at the CCYS from Friday the 27th of Feb – Sunday 1st of March 2015.  Please register your interest as per the information on the flyer attached.  If you can also let me know I would be grateful. I have not be able to find information on cost of the course as yet, but at this stage registering is the first step. The CYC executive is currently considering a proposal to reimburse training cost for those member who then in turn offer their skills to the club to run course.” – Scott Davis.
  • The Mickey Ink Port Douglas Race Week:  Will be held 24th-29th May, 2015.  The Micky Ink Port Douglas Race Week is held over Port Douglas’s Carnivale, so it is a fabulous time to be in Port Douglas, the town comes alive with a plethora of events and of course the regatta is the highlight.

This Coming Week

  • Sailors with Disabilities will recommence this Tuesday, 13th January, and as usual the following Thursday (15th).  Could all volunteers please be at the boatshed at3:30pm, and all participants (volunteers & sailors) please let Gordo know if you are coming via text message
    • Alternatively you may call Gordo on 0411 524 262 for further details.
  • Moonlight Sailing  – The boatshed will be open at4:30pm this afternoon for anyone who would like an ‘end-of-week bevy’.  Also, weather (& keen skippers) permitting you may want to join in on a moonlight sail.  Meet at boatshed -5:30pm.  Departing marina between6 and 6:30pm.
    • NB – The boatshed may not stay open during the moonlight sail, but is bound to reopen upon return (provided the sailing eventuates in the first place of course.)
  • SAGS is back – 10th January.  All Welcome!
  • Dinghy Sailing Due to popular demand dinghies will be held this Saturday, 10th January at 8:30am.  ‘Season-Proper’ Recommencement is still set for Saturday, 31stJanuary.
